Relation of scurvy to glucose tolerance test, liver glycogen, and insulin content of pancreas of guinea pigs.

چکیده
It was reported previously that deficiency of vitamin C in guinea pigs leads to diminished glucose tolerance (l), diminished deposition of liver glycogen (2), and diminished insulin content of t,he pancreas (3). In those experiments, however, the guinea pigs of the control group received ad lib&urn a natural diet consisting of green grass and germinated gram (Cicer arietinum) and not the scorbutic diet (4) with the supplement of ascorbic acid. The experimental results obtained with scorbutic guinea pigs might, therefore, be due to the different diets consumed by the animals and not due to the specific viOamin C deficiency. Further, the results might also be due to the effect of inanition as the paired feeding technique was not employed. In the present investigation the glucose tolerance test was studied, the glycogen value of the liver was determined, and the insulin content of the pancreas was estimated in both normal and scorbutic guinea pigs. The animals received the scorbutic diet with or without the supplement of ascorbic acid and the paired feeding technique was employed.

Relation of Scurvy to the Adrenalin Content of the Adrenal Glands of Guinea Pigs
It has been reported from this laboratory (1) that a deficiency of vitamin C in guinea pigs leads to changes in carbohydrate metabolism, as evidenced by glycosuria, a diabetic type of the glucose tolerance curve, and depletion of the glycogen content of the liver. We have also found that there is a fall in the insulin content of the pancreas (2), an increase in the size and also the number of i...

In scurvy diminished glucose tolerance has been reported in many species of animals. Banerjee and Ghosh observed a decreased liver and muscle hexokinase activity in scurvy. The decreased turnover rate of phosphorelated intermediates of carbohyd...

Scurvy is associated with disturbed carbohydrate metabolism. A diminished glucose tolerance has been observed by several workers in scorbutic guinea pigs (l-4), in scorbutic monkeys (5), and in human subjects with low blood ascorbic acid level (6, 7). Several workers (2,4, 8) have reported a decrease in the liver and muscle glycogen content of scorbutic guinea pigs. Banerjee and Ghosh (9) have ...
متن کاملStudies on the effect of thyroid and methylthiouracil on the glucose tolerance test in normal and scorbutic guinea pigs.
Patients with hyperthyroidism often have high fasting blood sugar levels and glucose tolerance curves of a diabetic type. These become normal after thyroidectomy (l-7). The glycogen content of the liver of rats is decreased when experimental hyperthyroidism is produced (8). Prina (9) has shown that intraperitoneal injection of thiouracil causes a definite increase in the glycogen content of the...
متن کاملEffect of scurvy on cholesterol and ascorbic acid in guinea pig adrenals.
It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lo...
